Yesterday I went and bought a few plants to add to my plant containers. I decided to try growing lettuce because I thought it would feel so "countryish" to walk out back and pick leaves to make a salad or add to a sandwich. I've never grown lettuce, only tomatoes, so this is a first for me.
The trouble with growing lettuce around here is that I'm afraid my cat will eat it. Especially if I grow them in a beautiful container and I fertilize, water and talk to it in my most attentive voice. If I pay too much attention to any plant that I care about, then a cat is surely going to destroy it. And this particular cat has been known to destroy things!
So I've opted to plant the lettuce in a container that hangs on the fence, up high, out of reach of the "destroyer". Maybe I'll actually get to enjoy the lettuce that I grow in my own backyard. And since Cody has already asked to sample the lettuce, maybe all my kids will become interested in adding lettuce to their diet.
Naaaahh! What was I thinking?

We have never grown lettuce but we do tomatoes, green peppers, banana peppers, jalapeno peppers, green onions, green beans.
I would love to grow jalopenos. And then also cilantro and tomatoes. That would almost be all the ingredients needed for SALSA! mmmmm

lettuce would be so fun to grow, and even if you don't get around to eating it, it looks very pretty in those containers!
I grew up with a vegetable garden in our back yard. Now, years later, I'm wanting to plant a garden this spring. The only thing about the fence is that we have a lot of squirrels that run along the top of the fence. I can just imagine them snacking on my lettuce. So I'll have to figure out a way to keep them away from whatever I plant. I might could use mesh like people put over tomato plants. Someone at The Plant Shed told me that is good to use. (By the way, I live in Texas)
I've been trying to grow lettuce off and on for about the last year. The first batch sprang up nicely then burned up under the tropical sun. The next batch I think I overwatered. I have seeds and haven't given up yet!
